Special Education2

ESU 13's Special Education Department serves students through special education and 504 processes. In addition to direct services to students, the Special Education Department also provides support and training to teachers, districts, and families.

Department Goals:

1. Provide comprehensive support to students, families, and schools through positive collaboration and respectful communication.

2. Unify teams by modeling best practices, providing training, and sharing resources.

Partnerships

ESU 13 partners with the Nebraska Department of Education - Office of Special Education for the Western Region ASD Network Project. The Nebraska ASD Network is a statewide plan for providing support to school districts and parents of children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). The State ASD Plan divides our state into 5 regions. Each region has an ASD Director, ASD Coordinator, and ASD Team. More information about the Western Region ASD Network can be found on its website.

The Brain Injury Regional School Support Team is a cooperative project between ESUs 13, 16, and 17 and the Nebraska Department of Education. The purpose of the BIRSST is to promote capacity for ESU and school district personnel through providing training to school staff who provide direct services to students who sustain a brain injury. This includes academic accommodations for Return to Learn. Those served by the BIRSST include students birth-21, parents/caregivers, educators, support staff, coaches, and administrators. The team supports districts in the evaluation of the areas of concern for students after sustaining a brain injury. For more information, please see the BIRSST website.
