The
strategies presented here are designed to acquaint the student with the
learning material they will be using in a particular
classroom
or setting, with the ultimate goal of assisting them in
perceiving
the text as a familiar learning aid.
In
order for students to utilize any reading material easily and more efficiently,
they must learn how the text was organized.
üScavenger
Hunt - Determine the extent of
the student's
knowledge about basic textbook
elements. Provide teams with a list of items to "hunt" for in the
text. Items on the list would need proof that the students found
them, utilizing tools such as table of
contents, index, glossary,
or graph.
üMatching
- Assess the level of student understanding
of the
resources available in the
text. In this exercise, a brief description of the information contained
in text learning aid is matched with its name.
üGuided
Review - Conduct an exploration
of the layout of the
book or text having students
find the specific learning tools
available. Upon completion
of this exercise, a class discussion should be conducted to ascertain what
students learned. Do they feel more confident in using their book
or text? This activity should be reinforced frequently with assignments
or activities which utilize these resources.
