ESU 13 Media
Specialists
Meeting, January
18, 2007
DL Sites:
ESU-Sidney,
ESU-Scottsbluff,
CSC
From 9 a.m. to
noon Public,
School and
Academic
Librarians
attended at
training session
with
representatives
from Follett.
The session, set
up by PLS
(Panhandle
Library System),
was held over
the Distance
Learning system
and 41 people
participated.
There were 24
people at the
afternoon school
library media
meeting,
representing 15
school districts
in the
panhandle. (See
the attendance
list at the end
of the
minutes.)
You are
encouraged to
share these
minutes with
your school
administrators.
ITEM #1 --
People at each
site introduced
themselves, and
Sandy White
explained what
the “lucky”
winners of the
red folders
received.
Anyone who
cannot be at the
February 16
media session
can contact
Sandy
swhite@panesu.org
for a CSC Media
P-12 Masters
brochure, a
“Nebraska
Librarians
Making a
Difference”
brochure or a
copy of the
Correlations to
L.E.A.R.N.S. CD.
ITEM #10
- The NEMA
(Nebraska
Educational
Media
Association)
Report and the
PLS Report were
moved to this
place on the
agenda. Pat
Gross reminded
the group that
Laurie Bauer’s
term on the NEMA
Board will end
this summer. It
would be nice to
have someone
from Western
Nebraska (the
Panhandle) run
for the Board
position that
Laurie is
vacating. It is
a two year term
and meetings are
four times a
year. There is
a retreat held
in July in
Aurora, a
conference in
October, a
teleconference
in January and a
meeting in April
in North
Platte.
Membership to
belong to NEMA
is $25.00 a year
which could be
reimbursed by
your school [NEMA
membership
application
link--
http://nema.k12.ne.us/mem.dir/membership.html]
There are people
working with NDE
to keep media
programs and
positions strong
in Rule 10.
Some of the
benefits of
being a NEMA
member are:
Nebraska Guide
(c. 2000), which
will be revised
soon and has
good information
for School
Library Media
programs; also
the NEMA website
and listserv,
newsletter,
correlations CD,
and workshops.
The 2007
NLA-NEMA
Conference will
be held in
Kearney October
24-26 with the
theme of
“Nebraska
Libraries-Charting
Paths to the
Future.” There
are scholarships
available from
both NEMA and
PLS to attend.

] Laurie Bauer
added that the
AASL (American
Association of
School
Librarians) 2nd
Draft of the new
“21st
Century Library
Learning
Standards” is
available, and
input is being
requested.

Upcoming dates
to remember from
PLS are:
*February 1 –
new
technologies, ½
day session held
at Sidney WNCC
Campus. The
Library
Commission has
hired Michael
Sauers from
Colorado as
their new tech
person.
*March 22 –
technology and
webpage workshop
in <st1:City
w:st="on"><st1:place
w:st="on">Alliance</st1:place></st1:City>
with Scott
Kinney and James
Britsch from
Chadron
presenting
*April 11 –
Sidney Public
Library ½ day
book repair
workshop with
Nancy Eddy [date
may change]
*July – a week
long Library
Leadership
Institute
Workshop at St.
Benedict Retreat
near Schyler.
More information
will be in the
upcoming
newsletter.
*January 30 –
Job Alike at the
Branding Iron in
Bayard at 5:30,
theme “Beating
Those Winter
Blahs”.
Deadline to
register to
Laurie
lbauer@panesu.org
or 308-586-1295
is January 26.
ITEM 2 –
The previews
were listed on
the website for
the area
teachers, and
were also
e-mailed to
school media
specialists.
Sandy asked if
teachers
preferred
preview lists in
electronic or
paper format.
Most chose
electronic
method, because
they were able
to forward the
message on to
their teachers.
Some like both
electronic and
print.
ITEM 3 –
A list of
preview
evaluations was
handed out with
recommendation
in bold. Out of
about 90 titles
available for
preview, 36 were
recommended for
purchase. If
you have any
other titles you
would like to
recommend you
need to let
Sandy know ASAP.
ITEM 4 –
MediaNebraska
usernames and
passwords for
all panhandle
school library
media
specialists was
distributed. If
you aren’t
currently on the
list contact
Sandy via e-mail
swhite@panesu.org
to add your
name. There are
good resources
for “21st
Century
Literacy” on
this website.
The site was
started to try
to get an
electronic
learning
community
started for
Nebraska school
library media
specialists.
The list may be
similar to other
listservs we
already have
through NEMA and
PLS.
ITEM 5 –
Audio Books,
Playaways, Books
with Videos:
Would you like
ESU to purchase
these types of
items? The PLS
has some audio
books in
Playaway format
to borrow to see
what they are
like. Cherie
said that some
SPED teachers
seem interested
in this new
format. The NLC
(Nebraska
Library
Commission) has
a program to
help schools and
libraries
purchase
Playaways at a
discount. Sandy
stated that we
have a lot of
Weston Wood
titles on DVD
and VHS, so if
you have the
book you could
make your own
book/video
package.
ITEM 6 -
PowerMediaPlus
Update – we have
120 teacher who
have requested
User IDs. We
have had good
feedback in our
area and across
the state. The
contract should
run for 4 ½ more
years. The main
issue for some
districts is
still bandwidth.
Some teachers
are requesting
computers with
DVD recorders,
and some
teachers are
saving PMP files
to USB flash
drives. Users
like using short
clips, and also
use projection
devices. The PMP
materials are
content rich,
but literature
based middle
school materials
are needed. The
morning session
on February 16
in Scottsbluff
will include
working with
lesson plans for
elementary and
secondary
students.
Closed caption
is available
only if you are
streaming.
Several members
present said
they would like
a training
session in their
school. (Contact
Sandy!)
Elaine Lake
suggested that
we research a
Media Center PC
that is
available
through Circuit
City. John Bays
will look into
this, and talk
to the ESU 13
technology
staff, and also
the Nebraska
Co-op Purchasing
equipment
specification
writing
committee for
the future. The
device looks
like it would be
good for some
needs, but is
fairly
expensive. Nebr.
Co-op specs
people said they
will probably
not have this
type of computer
equipment of
Co-op. If you
are interested,
contact John
Bays for the
information he
found on this
topic.
jbays@esu13.org
]
ITEM 7 –
Sandy
distributed a
list of titles
available for
February
including
Valentine’s Day
and Presidents’
Day. She
reminded the
group that these
are not complete
listing as we
have glitches in
the online
catalogs. If you
want a title
that you can’t
find please
contact Maggie
or Gloria to
help research it
for you. The
current online
catalog is very
time consuming
to use for title
lists, but we
hope this will
improve soon.
ITEM 8 –
DVD and
Videotape
formats for
07-08 school
year: Sandy
asked if the
schools would
prefer DVD or
videos
duplicated.
Most schools
indicated that
they preferred
DVDs. John Bays
suggested to the
group that if
they need more
DVD players they
could check on
ordering them
through Co-Op
purchasing at a
good price. New
master titles
ordered will be
mastered on DVD
only, but we
will be able to
copy in VHS
format if
requested.
Eventually we
will be going to
Internet, online
based digital
media such as
the
PowerMedaiPlus
service instead
of DVDs.
Several people
suggested that
we need to have
more computer
projection
devices in our
schools.
ITEM 9 –
Good news that
the ESU 13 Board
has approved the
purchase of a
new web based
online catalog
and scheduling
system for ESU
Media Services
was met with
applause from
the group. The
ESU media staff
will be working
very hard to get
the system ready
for use by
September 2007.
We are beginning
to work on the
conversion now.
User IDs will
probably match
the school
e-mail address
for each
person. Due to
the new system
being made
available in the
fall, Sandy
will not be
using a spring
survey from the
media
specialists.
ITEM 10 –
Upcoming
events:
February 16
Inservice –
morning session
with
PowerMediaPlus
with a focus on
lesson plans and
careers and
vocational areas
and the
statewide ESU
Alignment to
L.E.A.R.N.S.
website. This
will be held at
Gering High
School in Room
121. The
afternoon
session will be
presented by Dr.
Pam Springer,
current NEMA
President, and
will deal with
assessments in
library media.
ITEM 11 –
School library
media
promotional
ideas – Carole
Matthews
presented
several reading
posters that she
had made to
promote her
library that
included some of
her family
members. Sandy
also presented a
brochure by
Carol Luna for
the Kimball HS
Media Services,
and Laurie Bauer
had a brochure
for Bayard
Library Media
Services. If
you would like a
copy you may
contact them by
email:
caluna@panesu.org
lbauer@panesu.org
cmatthew@panesu.org
ITEM 12 –
Our next meeting
is scheduled for
April 19 over DL
at the same
sites. Sandy
plans to travel
to Chadron for
the meeting. It
was suggested
that maybe we
combine this
meeting with the
book repair
workshop on
April 11th.
Sandy and Cherie
will work this
out and let
people know ASAP
so you can get
the correct date
on your
calendar.
It was suggested
that at meetings
this spring
(i.e. Job Alikes,
the Febr. 16
Inservice)
suggestions be
solicited for
the NEMA/PLS
August Start Up
workshop. This
is a good time
and starts the
school year on a
positive note;
and suggestions
for session
topics and
presenters would
be appreciated.
Watch for
information in
the PLS
newsletter
before the end
of the school
year.

ESU #13 Media
Meeting Minutes
Gering Civic Center
September 18, 2006
10 -11:30 a.m.
At the first ESU #13
School Library Media
Specialist meeting
of the year 19
members were present
from the 11 county
area served by the
ESU. Sandy welcomed
everyone and thanked
them for attending.
Introductions were
made. The ESU #13
media center website
address is
http://www.esu13.org/media/
and all information
is current.
The final Title V/Media Utilization report showed the
distribution numbers
from the previous
school year. Titles
valued at almost
$97,000 were
permanently placed
in the area schools
during 2005-2006.
Cherie Longmuir from
the Panhandle
Library System
reported that the
Children’s Author
Tour will have six
school performances
for 2nd
and 3rd
graders in the
panhandle. The two
public performances
(and autograph
sessions) will be
held on October 17
at the Bayard High
School Auditorium at
7:00 pm and on
October 19 at the
Scottsbluff High
School Auditorium at
7:00 pm. The
featured author is
Judy Schachner. All
librarians are
invited to meet with
the author--on
October 18 at
Applebee’s at 6:00
pm and/or on the 19th
of October at 11:15
for lunch. The cost
is $7.00. Please
RSVP by Friday,
October 13 at
308-630-6250.
Cherie also reported
that Becky Pasco
from the
UniversityNebraska-Omaha</st1:PlaceName></st1:place>
will be in
Scottsbluff on
Wednesday, Sept. 20th
from 4:00-6:00 with
information on the
new school library
media masters
program to be
offered through
Chadron State
College. At the PLS
CE Committee meeting
last Tuesday there
were several of
ideas from the
surveys on topics
for workshops.
There is PLS
scholarship money
available for those
wishing to attend
the NLA-NEMA
Conference.
Laurie Bauer passed
around pictures
taken at the August
2nd
NEMA-PLS Institute
and pictures taken
at the September 6th
Author Tour Planning
meeting. Both
meetings were held
at Bayard High
School. It was
suggested that
Laurie put together
a display of these
events for the
NLA-NEMA conference.
Pam Gross reminded
the group that the
next Job A-Like
Meeting will be held
on Monday, September
25th at
the Wonderful House
in Scottsbluff.
These meetings are
held every other
month and all are
invited.
Sandydistributed a
CD that has teacher
guides and standards
alignments for
several of the new
media titles
available from the
ESU, plus IMAT
annual report and a
listing of expiring
titles. There were
150-200 new titles
purchased this year
in both DVD and VHS
format. This is
possibly the last
year that the ESU
will master new
titles in VHS
format. Format
issues for schools
were briefly
discussed and will
be discussed at our
future meetings
throughout this
year.
The new print
catalogs (complete
revision) from the
Sidney site will be
distributed within
the next two weeks.
The Scottsbluff site
will be sending out
a supplement soon of
the new titles
available through
their office. There
will be a letter
sent out on the van
for each teacher
with a listing of
new titles
available. You may
go online to get
more information.
The Sidneysite
online media catalog
has been updated
with the new titles.
Jim Copley will
begin working on the
Scottsbluff online
catalog update on
September 19. If you
talk to Jim, please
tell him thank you.
Previewing titles:
this year’s
designated areas are
math, computer
education, business
education and
marketing. Titles
must be c. 2002 or
later. There will be
three methods of
previewing this
year:
-
Traditional—120
titles have been
ordered in DVD
format and will
be available for
preview from
November 1st
through January
15th.
A listing of
preview titles
will be e-mailed
to media
specialists to
distribute to
teachers, and
the listing will
be available on
the ESU 13 Media
website.
http://www.esu13.org/media/
(online about
November 1st).
-
Online--The
Films Media
Group website
has short clips
of titles to
view online. The
website is:
www.films.com
Titles must have
a copyright of
2002 or later to
be considered
for digital
duplication
rights. If
your teachers
see clips of
titles they like
at this site,
let Sandy
swhite@panesu.org
know so that
she can submit
these titles to
the state group
for purchase of
digital
duplication
rights in the
spring. This
information and
some specific
titles will be
e-mailed to
media
specialists to
forward to their
vocational
teachers about
November 1st.
-
Preview DVD of
2006 releases
from Landmark
Media. This
company has 2-3
minute clips
from over 35 new
titles available
on one DVD. A
list was
distributed to
those present.
If you want a
copy (one per
school) of the
DVD for your
teachers to
preview, contact
Maggie
mbernal@esu13.org
or Gloria
grose@panesu.org
Teachers will
need to e-mail
Sandy if they
want the title
submitted for
purchase.
NEW Media on Demand
Service: Power Media
Plus currently has
over 60 teachers in
the area signed up
as users.
Scottsbluff Middle
Schoolcurrently uses
the most. The Power
Media Plus Media On
Demand service was
purchased to replace
Digital Curriculum
and United Streaming
available for the
previous few years.
If you wish to have
an account set up to
view this site
contact Sandy
swhite@panesu.org
Teachers must
provide their
district, their
school email
address and their
name.
At the September 27th
ESU 13 Advisory
Council Meeting,
Sandy will discuss
the new Power Media
Plus service and how
this service should
be positively
effected by the
scheduled
DL/Internet update
in the summer of
2008. You are urged
to work with the
tech people at your
school site before
using PMP because of
bandwidth and your
school server
issues.
The 2007 NLA-NEMA
Conference is to be
held at the Quest
Center</st1:PlaceType>
in Omaha. There is
a registration form
in your packet and
you may go to the
website for
additional
information.
http://www.2006nla-nemaconference.info/
The deadline for
early conference
registration is
September 30, and
the deadline for
discounted room
reservations is
September 22 at
$124/room. After
that date the room
price goes to more
than $200 so get
your reservations
made now.
The February 16
inservice was
discussed. There
will be a media
strand. Members who
volunteered to help
with the program are
Sharon Johnson,
Laurie Bauer, Carol
Mathews, Kathy
Terrell and Sue
Arndt. Thanks to
Kim Elder for
helping us get our
strand approved for
the February event.
The next meeting
will be held over DL
on January 18th at
1:00 pm at the
following three
sites: ESU
13-Sidney, Chadron
State College-Miller
Hall/Room 309 and
ESU 13-Scottsbluff.
The final meeting
for the year will be
April 19th
over DL at 1:00 pm
at the same sites.
[BJ has confirmed
these sites.]

ESU 13 School Media
Specialists and
Title V Meeting
Minutes
April 20, 2006, Noon
– 3:00 p.m.
Alliance, Chadron,
Scottsbluff and
Sidney (Distance
Learning Sites)
Minutes will also be
available at the ESU
13 Media website:
http://www.esu13.org/media/
Those attending at
the four locations
introduced
themselves over the
DL system. Many
attending received
some “free” PBS
videos (7-12 grade
level) that were
extra copies from
the ESU Media
Center-Sidney site.
You may keep these
tapes in your school
for the life of the
tape. By next fall
(2006) the ESU will
no longer have the
rights to duplicate
many PBS titles.
Before your district
purchases PBS
titles, check with
the ESU Media
Centers because both
sites will still
have many current
titles available to
circulate.
NEW TITLES FOR FALL,
FALL PREVEIWS: A
copy of annotations
for new titles was
available for
everyone to look
at. It was noted
that there are no
ESU media numbers
assigned to the
individual titles,
and they won’t be
until they are
received by the
Service Unit this
summer and are put
on the booking
system for check
out. We have
purchased the
“encompassing
duplication rights”
which means titles
can be duplicated on
VHS or DVD or
(eventually) will be
available for
downloading or
streaming from a
server.
The
statewide focus next
fall for previews is
on math, business
and computer
education. If you
have requests for
certain curriculum
topics e-mail Sandy
swhite@panesu.org
by the end of August
before she attends
the September
Preview Seminar.
The March 2006 Media
Distribution report
for the ESU 13 Media
Centers was
distributed, but not
discussed. Please
note the high
utilization of
videos in digital
format in
panhandle schools!
Some teachers in the
area are doing a
great job of
embracing this new
technology!
REPORTS:

that you
encourage
students to
attend programs
at their public
library this
summer.
-
There will be a
Nebraska Library
Commission
databases
workshop on June
20 in
Scottsbluff.
NEMA
– Board Meeting was
April 8 meeting at
North Platte H. S.,
attended by Pat
Gross and Laurie
Bauer, Board members
from the panhandle.
There are lots of
benefits from
belonging to NEMA
including a
newsletter. There
may be funding
available from your
schools for the dues
for professional
organizations such
as NEMA ($25/year or
$60/3 years).
Membership
information is on
the website:
http://nema.k12.ne.us/
-
Unfortunately,
the State
Legislature veto
override of the
bill to fund
encyclopedia
data base didn’t
pass. NDE has
revisions on
Rule 10. Go to
the NDE site
under policy and
procedures and
Rule 10 for
these
revisions.
There is an
interpretation
in the Spring
NEMA
Newsletter.
There was
discussion about
when the new
rules go into
effect, and it
may be as early
as the 2006-07
school year.
-
NEMA and the
Nebraska
Information
Power Committee
will be working
on the revision
of the
Nebraska Guide
For Developing
and Evaluating
school Library
Media Programs,
which was last
revised in 2000.
Sandy, Laurie
and Ruth Walker
are on the IP
committee and
will help with
this, beginning
at the NEMA
Retreat in
July. The IP
committee has
also finished
the correlation
of the
Information
Literacy
Standards to
L.E.A.R.N.S. and
technology
standards. These
will be
available on the
NEMA website
soon, and also
on CDs and print
copies. The
NEMA candidates
for officers and
the board were
mentioned. Be
sure to vote,
and let’s try to
keep our
panhandle/western
Nebraska
representation.
-
It would benefit
us all to know
more about the
65% Solution
(Everyone should
Google it!)
which does not
take into
account school
programs like
guidance and
library. The
movement is
taking hold in
nearby states
such as Kansas,
Colorado and
also in Texas.
-
The NLA/NEMA
Conference is
October 25-27 at
the Qwest Center
in Omaha.
Scholarships are
available to
NEMA members to
help with the
cost of
attending. More
information on
the NEMA
website:
http://nema.k12.ne.us/
Becky Pasco
(UNO) and Milton
Wolff (CSC) are
working on a
cooperative
agreement for a
masters program
that should be
very beneficial
to SLMS master
degree
candidates from
the
panhandle—beginning
in the fall of
2007.
TITLE V - It was
reported that all of
the remaining Title
V Cooperative
dollars will be
spent soon on
acquisition of
“encompassing
duplication rights”
and masters of
titles through ESU
statewide projects.
Thank you to all the
school districts who
consorted Title V
dollars this year.
Next year schools
should consider
writing their own
Title V grants or
assigning the
dollars to another
area of NCLB or
REAP.

explaining that at
the end of the pilot
project ALL copies
from the pilot
period must be
erased/destroyed—including
copies on CDs, DVDs,
hard drives and
servers. The vendor
has all the
distribution records

participants
requested a pilot
project VOD users
list of teachers
from their
buildings. Lists
will be sent out the
first week in May,
and the official
letter will be sent
out as soon as we
receive it.
The
ESUs are in the
process of
purchasing another

service for Video On
Demand titles.

Sandy asked the
people to go to the
site to sign up for
the 14 day free
trial to look at
what is available.

has given us a code

All new titles will
have “encompassing
duplication rights”
which means titles
can be duplicated on
VHS or DVD or
(eventually) will be
available for
downloading or
streaming from a
server.
SLMS Survey
results were
mentioned, and also
the District
Satisfaction survey
results. Those who
took the time to do
the online survey
are to be
commended. These
survey results are a
very important piece
of data for our Unit
Improvement Process.
MEDIA SERVICES
MARKETING AND
TRAININGS: Craig
Hicks would like to
do another Marco
Polo training in May
or June. Please
contact him to set
up a training.
Sandy will come to
your district, work
with the
library/media group
or with individuals
on how to use the
ESU 13 Media Website
and Media Services.
Contact her.
The new
Video-On-Demand
PowerMediaPlus
website training for
ESU staff members is
in May, and Sandy
will train school
people
(anytime—anywhere!!)
[NOTE: the NEMA/PLS
August 2nd
Jump Start training
will have a session
on this topic.]
February 16, 2007 is
the Inservice Day
for ESU 13 area
schools. If media
people want to plan
something for
ourselves we need to
get it worked on and
submitted to the
Staff Development
Department SOON.
Laurie Bauer was
asked to help Sandy
with this.
Possibilities
include:
-
21st
Century
Literacies
(Information,
Visual,
Cultural, Media)
a web based
program
available to
schools through
the myelearning
system. ESU
media
coordinators
will be helping
to sponsor this
program.
Sessions will be
at NETA this
spring and NLA/NEMA
next fall.
-
Work together
on School
Library
Curriculum which
Allison said we
many need to
have in place as
early as fall
2007. (She will
check her
sources for this
timeline.)
OTHER ITEMS:
Sue Gosnell from
WNCC offered to help
work with the K-12
schools on
trainings,
facilities, in
anyway possible.
Prior to the meeting
PLS hosted a
job-alike/lunch at
Scottsbluff, and at
the Sidney site we
had a “brown bag”
lunch. (We hope the
people at the other
sites had an
opportunity for
lunch together!)
Some SLMS told us
they will not be
working in the ESU
13 area next year
(sad news for us!).
We will miss them at
our meetings.
If
you have any
questions about PLS
or NEMA, please
contact Cherie
clongmuir@nlc.state.ne.us
or Pat
pgross@geringschools.net
or Laurie
lbauer@panesu.org
Our next meeting
will be on September
18 at the Gering
Civic Center, with a
lunch hosted by
Duane and Tom
Munson.
