News Fall Semester 2009-2010:
LifeLink
Program Benefits from National Technical
Assistance
Doors to colleges are opening for people with intellectual and other developmental disabilities in many different ways all over the country. The LifeLink-Nebraska program received national technical assistance from the Think College Initiative at University of Massachusetts-Boston on October 8 and 9. Debra Hart and Cate Weir worked with a group of 20 stakeholders in a strategic planning process on October 8. The following day, they presented information to the entire WNCC faculty and staff. This national movement has been fueled by recent reauthorization of the Higher Education Opportunity Act which now includes language specific to students with “Intellectual disabilities” and makes it possible for students to receive Federal Pell Grants, Federal Work-Study, and access to coursework without passing an “ability to benefit” test. Two large federal grants will create model demonstration programs across the country as well as a coordinating center. For more information visit: www.thinkcollege.net.
