Eating an Artichoke
– A Mother’s Perspective on Asperger Syndrome |
Echo R. Fling |
$19.95 |
'One of the most
poignant moments in this truly wonderful book occurs when Echo's son,
Jimmy, who has Asperger Syndrome, says to his mother, "You promised to
help me learn what things mean in life, and I promised to help you learn
what life means." This profound statement captures the essence of
Asperger Syndrome and should give all who live and work with individuals
who have this exceptionality a sense of joy, hope and the potential for
accomplishment. In this meaningful and heartfelt book, the author
clearly explains Asperger Syndrome and its impact on children and their
families. She discusses the daily joys and challenges of living with a
person with Asperger Syndrome in such detail that one almost feels a
part of the family. This book is a must read for parents and teachers
who are interested in learning more about Asperger Syndrome.'

Embarrassed Often
Ashamed Never |
Lisa B. Elliott |
$13.95 |
In this cross between Chicken Soup for
the Soul and the best of Erma Bombeck, the author, the mother of a
young boy with Asperger Syndrome, gives us a rare glimpse of the ups and
downs of family life with an individual who has autism spectrum
disorder. From swim meets to Chinese restaurants, from school to church,
to birthday parties, and everything in between, the reader is let into
the everyday lives of the Elliott family. At once tender and hilarious,
the episodes in the book all illustrate the basic tenet of this charming
book -- while living with a child with autism spectrum disorder often
leads to embarrassing moments, nobody ever needs be ashamed.
Unable to issue a prescription for
magical pills of understanding to be given out to the public as needed
or a magical pill to make life easier for individuals with autism
spectrum disorder, Lisa Elliott enlightens, encourages...and makes her
readers laugh. The brief chapters, categorized under the autism spectrum
characteristic they best
portray, make great reading for waiting rooms, bus commutes, lunch
breaks and other moments when we can leave the world around us for a few
moments to refresh ourselves only to return with a more informed,
positive attitude.
This book is a must read for parents,
family members, educators and others who live and work with individuals
who have autism spectrum disorders.

Exploring Feelings:
Cognitive Behaviour Therapy to Manage Anger
3 Copies |
Dr. Tony Attwood |
$19.95 |
The
cognitive behavior therapy program Exploring Feelings was designed to be
highly structured, interesting and successful in encouraging the
cognitive control of emotions. Every child participating in the program
has a workbook for the six two-hour sessions that includes activities
and information to explore the specific feelings of being happy,
relaxed, anxious or angry. There are sections in the workbook to record
individual comments and responses to questions. At the end of each
session, a project is explained to the child, which is to be completed
before the next session. At the start of the next session the project is
discussed with the person implementing the program or the group of
participants using the program. A metaphor was created of the child
being an astronaut or scientist exploring a new planet, as the author
has noted that children with Asperger Syndrome are often interested in
exploration of the physical world, science and science fiction. The
program was designed as a treatment for an anxiety disorder or anger
management problem in children with Asperger syndrome but the program
can be equally applied to children with high functioning autism and
pervasive developmental disorder, not otherwise specified (PDDNOS). The
program does not have to be implemented by a qualified psychologist. A
teacher, speech pathologist, occupational therapist or parent could
implement the program without having training in cognitive behavior
therapy.

Genius Genes: How
Asperger Talents Changed the World
proposes that many famous historical figures had an autistic mind-style,
and that this should color the way we approach autism today. Arguing
that highly creative people are largely "born and not made," the authors
present case studies of the lives of 21 famous individuals, tying their
personalities, talents and lifestyles to the major characteristics of
Asperger Syndrome. This book's chief importance lies in challenging -
from a fresh perspective an often negative perception of autism and
Asperger Syndrome by demonstrating that many persons with autism
spectrum disorders have lived rich, complex and productive lives, and
that their intelligence and special talents contributed hugely to
shaping the world that we now know. |
